Residential Treatment Therapist

SUMMARY:  The Residential Therapistis responsible for comprehensive counseling (75%) and case management (25%) services to difficult populations/youth-at-risk and their families along with providing emotional support and guidance.  Will apply supervisory techniques required in the care and counseling of youth.  This position assists the youth to become aware of strengths and needs for healthy adjustment to their environments.

QUALIFICATIONS:  Graduate from an accredited college or university with a Masters degree in Social WorkLicensed or license eligible preferredCounseling experience needed working with difficult populations/atrisk youth.  At least one yearexperience working with youth with mental health/co-occurringdisorders strongly preferred.  Should have supervisory experience.Must meet all requirements for pre-employment as required by Children and Family Services/Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village and/or state regulations and licensure requirements.


 


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:  Current valid driver’s license from state of residence with a satisfactory driving record as defined by Children and Family Services/Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village’s vehicle policy and/or liability insurance carrier.  You must obtain a current valid driver’s license within the first thirty (30) days of employment if your driver’s license is from a state other than the one of residenceMaintain certifications in First Aid/CPR & appropriate crisis intervention program.Annual training is required. 


 


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Must be able to bend, stoop, push, pull, reach, sit, stand and walk for periods of time.  Must be able to lift from the floor to waist up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 30 pounds occasionally.  Must be able to react quickly to unpredictable situations with youth, which may require rapid or heavy physical exertion.  Must be able to utilize proper body mechanics while conducting restraints of aggressive or assaultive youth.  May be required to run varied distances.


 


VISUAL AND COGNITIVE DEMANDS:  Must have excellent communication skills.  Must be able to generate written reports or summaries using prescribed format.  Must be able to give and receive verbal and written instructions.  Must have fine vision, sustained vision, and peripheral vision.  Must possess sufficient eye/hand coordination to operate office equipment including, but not limited to phone, computer, calculator, copier or typewriter, if applicable. 


 


WORK LOCATION AND ENVIRONMENT:  Home-like, office, and machine shop settings with varying degrees of background noise.  Lighting and ventilation as found in a typical home, school or office setting.  The buildings, grounds and vehicles are tobacco free.  The possibility of exposure to blood borne pathogens exists if universal precautions are not followed.  Facilityis operated on a 24 hour per day, seven day per week basis.  Employees may be required to work any shift.   May involve some travel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The successful applicant should be able to perform ALL of the following functions at a pace and level of performance consistent with the actual job performance requirements.


 


  • Provides individual, group, and family therapy. 

  • Composes reports, including but not limited to individual treatment plans, progress reports & discharge summaries.  Compiles data to include youth incident reports, matters of record, academic achievement, group & individual progress.  Reviews same with youth at appropriate intervals.

  • Communicates pertinent information with families, supervisors, referring agencies and other involved staff to promote cooperative relationships that benefit the youth. 

  • Implements treatment and therapeutic programs for assigned youth; assists youth to understand and overcome social and emotional problems.

  • Prepares individualized program plans for youth and their families. 

  • Follows agency procedures to promote optimum safety practices to provide a safe, clean and secure environment for youth.  Complies with all state and/or federal safety procedures as trained, and documents all safety measures as required.

  • Ensures the health, safety and well-being of youth to include reporting suspected allegations of abuse/neglect to proper authorities and supervisors according to agency and/or regulatory timelines.

  • Provides guidance to youth and models appropriate behavior.

  • Teaches youth problem solving skills and tools for monitoring their own behavior. 

  • Assists youth with improving social and communication skills.

  • Meets with youth on a one-to-one basis and/or family sessions as needed.

  • Makes case presentations to administrative and supervisory staff when requested.

  • Compiles, studies and interprets occupational, educational, and economic information in order to aid youth in making and carrying out goals and objectives.

  • Communicates pertinent information with families, referring agencies, supervisors and other pertinent staff.

  • Collaborates with local mental health adolescent practitioners per youth need.

  • Communicates in a manner that respects the confidentiality of each person receiving services.

  • Participates in the study of relevant policies and procedures; makes recommendations for changes where appropriate.

  • Attends and participates in all required new hire, annual, and other assigned training and attends meetings as assigned. 

 


  • Attends scheduled staff meetings, group meetings, and other staff and group activities essential for effective program and service delivery, and to promote communications and the proper flow of relevant information between administration, staff and youth.

 


  • Cooperates and is willing to assist others and accepts direction from own supervisor.

  • Adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

 


  • Remains alert at all times and react quickly, efficiently and calmly in emergency.

 


  • Operates a vehicle during both the day and night where driving conditions could include heavy traffic and unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, rain, ice and snow.

  • Maintains professional and respectful relations with others.

  • Presents a neat, clean and professional appearance and dresses appropriately for the job in accordance to Children and Family Services/Southwest Indiana Regional Youth Village’s dress policy.

 


  • Sets a good example for others by own self-discipline and behavior.

 


  • Promotes positive community relations and utilizes needed community services.

  • Notifies proper authorities of circumstances or situations that present possible health or safety hazards.

 


  • Does not engage in activities other than official business during working hours.

 


  • Performs other work as required or assigned.
