Primary Function: Overall cleaning and maintenance of kennel areas to provide odor free and low stress environment for animals including but not limited to intake, daily care, classification and handling of impounded animals. Duties and responsibilities:
- Cleans and maintains kennel area with necessary disease preventative chemicals
- Feeds, waters and provides daily care for all animals
- Assists with intake procedure involving weighing, vaccinating and worming animals
- Administers medications for animals as prescribed (not sprinkling medication on top of food)
- Assists with vaccinations and euthanasia of animals
- Handles and controls animals including difficult or potentially dangerous animals.
- Reports any potential health or behavioral problems in animals to supervisor
- Politely assists the public and volunteers with information regarding animals or the facility
- Bathe animals and trim nails. Provide exercise as needed (out of kennels a minimum of two times per day).
- Maintains records of impounded animals
- General cleaning duties of back offices included but not limited to emptying trash, mopping floors and cleaning restroom using necessary chemicals.
- Wash and Dry laundry
- Properly clean animal food bowls and play toys
- Aid with temperament testing of animals
- Interact with animals to aid in proper socialization
- Observe animals in kennel areas noting any of the following symptoms: Unusual fecal results, vomiting or failure to eat or drink, Lethargy; any unusual discharges, sores or hair loss, Unusual behavior issues, Report any of the above symptoms to Animal Health Care Specialist, Kennel Manager or General Manager.
- Demonstrate ability to coordinate daily work with volunteers (i.e. helping with dog walking)
- Must be available to work any day of the week on a possible rotating schedule
- Provide daily Quality of Life to animals by interacting with them as time permits and walking dogs as needed to meet the requirements as set by the board (minimum of 2 times per day).
- Properly complete necessary paperwork on a daily basis.
- Any other duties as specified by supervisor
Education/Experience High School diploma or equivalent (GED) and one year experience working with the public or Not-for-profit organizations in addition to animal handling skills, animal behavior or care. Skills
- Ability to Utilize and comprehend instructions, correspondence and memos.
- Ability to effectively present information to coworkers and the general public.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Knowledge of animal boarding/grooming/handling processes used in rescue shelters and boarding facilities.
- Basic understanding of animal care terminology
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Valid Driver’s License or State Id required
- Legal United States Citizen
Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those needed to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to stand, walk, use hands to finger, touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; speak and hear. The employee on occasion may be required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with assistance. Specific vision requirements include close, distance and peripheral vision. Work Environment While performing daily duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to high noise levels, noxious odors, fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and potentially volatile situations that can present risk of violence or injury.Employee must be able to identify workplace hazards that if not handled appropriately could cause injury. Employee must take necessary precautions and or safety measures to respond to and prevent hazards and/or injury.
