Treasurer - Deputy Treasurer/Garnishment... - Vigo County, IN - Terre Haute, IN

The Deputy Treasurer/Garnishments for the Vigo County Treasurer’s Office is responsible for collecting, recording, and processing taxes and related payments and assisting the public.

Examples of Duties:


Collects tax payments and receipts, including verifying monies received, entering payment for parcel, and posting of daily payments.


Maintains positive public relations for the Treasurer’s Office and responds to taxpayer inquiries/complaints, providing assistance and explaining procedures, researching tax information/records, resolving discrepancies and providing necessary follow-up.


Answers telephone, determining nature of call, responding to inquiries, taking messages, and/or directing calls to appropriate individual or department.


Processes redeemed property payments, tax sale payments, mobile home transfers and/or mobile home moving, liquor license, surplus, inheritance IH9, and research personal property judgments and present information.


Maintains file management and record retention, including processes tax payments made at financial institute, lock box, and/or drop box, and calculating late fee, pulling documents and researching inheritance tax payments, and alphabetize and filing return mail collection periods. Shreds checks past required document retention period, and creates collection reports for non-sufficient funds (NSF) collection, including obtaining necessary quietuses and processing cash payments as needed.


Maintains and process garnishments, including cross referencing employees with list received, adding/deleting employee as required, coding in appropriate system, mailing or faxing government employee list of delinquent properties, running reports, filing out required forms for State Auditor, and providing copies for proof of payment amounts and dates paid.


Performs related duties as assigned.


Typical Qualifications:


High school diploma or GED.


Ability to meet all Department hiring requirements, including passage of a drug test.


Knowledge of state laws pertaining to tax collections and policies, practices, and legal requirements of the Department, with ability to effectively respond to inquiries and apply appropriate procedures accordingly.


Working knowledge of standard bookkeeping principles and practices, and ability to make arithmetic calculations, record transactions, and maintain complete records.


Working knowledge of standard office procedures and computer software used by the Department, with ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.


Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare correspondence and tax statements as required.


Knowledge of basic filing systems and ability to create and maintain accurate and complete Department files/records.


Ability to properly operate standard office equipment, such as computer, calculator, telephone, copier, scanner, counterfeit detector, and fax machine.


Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.


Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.


Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.


Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and follow oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or written form.


Ability to analyze, evaluate, observe, diagnose, and investigate data.


Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.

Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, often under time pressure.


Ability to occasionally apply knowledge of people and/or locations, and plan and layout assigned work projects.


Possession of a valid Indiana driver’s license and a demonstrated safe driving record.


Supplemental Information:


Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, and the public for purposes of exchanging information and resolving discrepancies.


Incumbent reports directly to Chief Deputy.


Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment, involving sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, bending, reaching, keyboarding, close/far vision, color/depth perception, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication.
