Certified Therapeutic Recreational Specialist


Sisters of Providence of St. Mary-of-the-Woods, are a congregation of Roman Catholic women religious (sisters) founded by Saint Mother Theodore Guerin in 1840. Through ministries in the United States, Taiwan and China, the mission of the Congregation is to honor Divine Providence and to further God’s loving plans by devoting itself to works of love, mercy and justice in service among God’s people.  Providence Health Care, a sponsored ministry of the Sisters of Providence, offers assisted living and long term care services on the campus of St. Mary-of-the-Woods.


Sisters of Providence & Providence Health Care are currently seeking a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist as a Life Enrichment Director to organize, implement, and direct the overall operation of the campus Life Enrichment Programs.  Working with a multi-disciplinary team, this creative and innovative leader will develop and implement programs that will address the individual wellness needs of the residents of the community.Must be flexible with work hours to meet workload requirements.


*Engaging sisters intellectually, spiritually, physically – providing entertainment but not limiting activities to entertainment


*Working collaboratively with clinical staff, residential life staff, volunteers and sisters so that a variety of people take leadership in activities


*Attending to the needs of persons in cognitive decline


*Providing opportunities for socialization among the elder population


*Providing activities that can be shared by residents in Providence Hall, Lourdes Hall and Mother Theodore Hall


*Collaborating with music and art therapy programs at SMWC


*Communicating as needed with Health Care Representatives, Sisters’ General Officers


*Providing short- and long-range plans to General Officer liaison and PHC President to ensure that each of the two entities is receiving adequate attention


Qualifications:


A qualified candidate must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Therapeutic Recreation and a certification or eligibility to apply for a National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC).


Experience working with the senior population, 2-5 years minimum.


Experience leading and developing programs, 2-5 years minimum.


Preferred Qualifications:


Good interpersonal relationship skills and demonstrated ability to work with seniors in providing person-centered recreation and wellness programs.


Flexibility in planning working hours to meet individual caseload requirements.


CPR certified.

Job Description


Leadership Responsibilities:


       Organize, direct and implementation of the overall campus Life Enrichment Program


       Responsible for the leadership and oversight of the staff within the department


Planning of Individual Care:


       Assess community members for recreation and leisure skills and needs.  Assessment includes individuals’ strengths and abilities as well as deficits and age specific needs. Create and implement well-rounded recreational program for community members.


       Identifies concrete behavioral goals for individualized care and methods to achieve those goals.


       Establishes and maintains a safe environment for individual care.


       Identifies supplies and materials needed for therapeutic activities.  Develops plan for recreation and leisure activities for each individual based on the assessment and treatment plan.


Implementation of Individual Care:


       Documents assessment, identified goals, methods utilized and progress toward goals in accordance with standards.


Evaluation of Individual Progress:


       Recognizes when the individual has achieved goals or has achieved maximum benefit from T.R. services, and when necessary, modifies treatment plan accordingly.


Related to individual care and team membership:


       Establishes and maintains effective communication with physicians, unit personnel and other community agency personnel.


       Attends and participates on committees and in meetings as assigned.


       Stays abreast of current treatment modalities by actively participating in ongoing educational experiences.


       Maintains statistical records for individual care services as assigned.


       Participates in performance improvement activities as assigned.


Other job functions:


       Promotes the awareness and understanding of the profession of recreational therapy through participation in in-service programs, planning and providing in-service education and when assigned, supervising student experiences in Therapeutic Recreation.


       Other duties as assigned.
