AmeriCorps member will be responsible for the recruitment of new volunteers, coordinating disaster training opportunities, providing disaster preparedness programs/education and building and strengthening relationships with community partners.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Recruit new volunteers with a special focus on disaster volunteers
- In conjunction with DPM and Disaster Workforce Manager, identify promotion and growth opportunities for current volunteer base
- Teach disaster preparedness and basic level disaster training courses, once experience in the activity has been gained
- Assist with the scheduling, registration, and coordination of disaster training
- Maintain proper volunteer records in Volunteer Connection and as needed, prepare training materials and enter class participants in the SABA system
- Assist with the on-going planning and networking to coordinate and strengthen Red Cross’ role in Emergency Support Function 6: Mass Care, Emergency Assistance, Housing, and Human Services
- Act as a member of an on-call Disaster Action Team on a rotating basis and conduct disaster casework at the Chapter (participation on a DAT team requires a minimum of 8 disaster training courses)
- Assist the Red Cross on local disaster relief operations, with the possibility of national disaster relief operation deployment if desired
Essential Functions of Position:
- Public speaking and the ability to educate/teach/train others (25%)
- Sensitivity, compassion and listening skills required to meet with clients impacted by disaster and other traumatic events (20%)
- Ability to serve with limited supervision (20%)
- Ability to serve evenings and weekends (15%)
- Data Entry / Computer Skills (10%)
- Ability to drive a car, including clear, valid driver’s license and insurance (10%)
Principal Working Relationships: The AmeriCorps member will be coordinating a wide variety of constituents and must be able to collaborate with a diverse audience including:
- Employees, volunteers and fellow members within the American Red Cross
- Community partners and organizations
- Red Cross Disaster, Military, and International Services’ clients
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to serve both independently and as part of a team
- Background in education, communication, recruiting, or volunteer management a plus
- Interest in disaster response, planning, and preparedness
- Strong organizational skills and excellent communication skills including public speaking, written and e-mail
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and the ability to coordinate projects with multiple parts
- Ability to develop and deliver unique presentations for a specific audience
Physical, Emotional, and Intellectual Requirements:
- Flexibility to serve in a variety of settings including high-pressure circumstances such as a disaster
- Strong ability to serve with colleagues in a close office environment
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods of time
Academic and Experience Qualifications:
- High School diploma required, bachelor’s degree preferred
Training:
AmeriCorps members will receive training in several basic disaster response courses totaling 45 hours in addition to CPR and First Aid training. Members may also elected to participate in additional disaster training based upon their interest and local need. Service Conditions: The majority of the member’s service will be performed in an office environment. Members may give presentations, attend meetings or provided disaster services at offsite locations and/or outside normal business hours.
