Emergency Department (ED) Patient Care Technician (PCT) - PRN *Hours Vary job - Terre Haute Regional Hospital - Terre Haute, IN

• Assists the licensed staff in implementation of plan of care and documents in chart patient’s response to interventions


• Maintains clear communication with ED Providers and licensed nurse assigned to patient about all patient care issues


• Assist licensed nurse with preparation of patient for exam


• Stock/check ED supplies and equipment


• Participates in continuous quality improvement projects


• As appropriate, keep patients informed of their treatment plan


• As appropriate, chart on patients emergency department record


• Clean stretchers, rooms, and general areas as appropriate


• Transport non-monitored stable patients to inpatient units and diagnostic areas


• Tag and report broken equipment according to policy


• Assist nursing staff with cleaning of wounds and preparing for sutures


• Assist unit secretary as needed


• Assist ED providers with lumbar punctures and suturing


• Provides for patient safety


• Attends meeting and in-services as required


• Cares for patient’s belongings according to hospital procedure


• Provides individualized care responsive to needs of patients, families and physicians


• Assist with implementation and maintenance of cervical spine precautions


• Connect patient to oxygen at prescribed rate and cardiac/vital signs monitor


• Perform 12-lead EKG’s


• Assist ED Providers with pelvic exams


• Perform CPR


• Perform Point of Care Testing per competency: finger stick glucose checks, and I-Stat’s, and report results to a licensed provider immediately.


• Perform phlebotomy after completion of special training


• Apply ortho-glass and/or other splints and dressings


• Adjust crutches and assist with crutch teaching


• Assists with discharge of patient; helps patient recover all personal belongings, accompanies patient to automobile


• Feeding; prepare patient for meals, passes and picks up trays, assists patients as necessary, passes nourishment’s and ice water


• Assists with patient hygiene; oral hygiene, perineal care, skin care, decubitus care


• Assists with preparation of patient for surgery


• Collects specimens for Laboratory; urine, feces, sputum


• Gives and removes bedpans and urinals, records I/O


• Provides for patient’s comfort and safety. Displays knowledge of fall protocol


• Gives treatments after instruction by and under the supervision of professional nurses; i.e., enemas, ace bandages, ice bags, TED hose, hot and cold non-sterile compresses, assists with Foley care


• Cares for patient receiving respiratory therapy; and O

• Cares for patient requiring isolation according to hospital procedure


• Observes and reports, untoward symptoms such as cyanosis, dyspnea, rash, character of feces, urine and vomit, accidents, complaints, and requests


• Reinforces compliance with RN teaching and plan of care


• Participates in report process to plan patient care for oncoming shift


• Maintains patients’ privacy; uses bedside curtains, drapes patient, keeps confidential details of patient’s hospitalization


• Receives and sends messages; answers patients’ call lights promptly, answers telephone giving name unit and position, relays message to professional nurse


• Maintains conditions of occupied patient rooms, including wiping of spills, picking up clutter, emptying trash receptacles


• Cleans rolling stock such as wheelchairs, gurneys, IV poles. Places dirty equipment in soiled utility room for CSS to properly clean


• Strips beds and clears patient care rooms at time of discharge; prepares for new admissions


• Charts accurately and completely observations and procedures rendered to patients


• Assists with orientation of new Patient Care Technicians


• Performs other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the department


• Attend Code of Conduct training course annually

Qualifications

Essential educational/licensure, skills and experience:

• High school graduation or equivalent preferred


• Pre-hospital or ED experience preferred


• Knows accepted medical terms and abbreviations


• Performs clinical skills after appropriate training, competency assessment


• Certification: BLS must be maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital

Valued but not required educational/licensure, skills and experience:

Previous Emergency Medical Technician Training and/or Certification Preferred

Certified Nursing Assistant or more than 1 year as a Patient Care Tech Preferred

Physical demands and the work environment:
Physical demands:
This position will require you to lift 50 pounds or less frequently, lift up to 100 pounds occasionally. Walk and stand most of the day, bend and stoop frequently, push and pull equipment and carts on a regular basis. Manual dexterity (eye hand coordination). May perform shift work. Maneuver weight of patients. May hear alarms and or recording devices. Reaching above the shoulder frequently. Repetitive wrist movements. Finger dexterity. On-Call Work. Acuity far and near. Depth Perception.

Work environment:
While performing the duties of this job, you will spend approximately 75% or more of your time inside. You may be exposed to blood or body fluids, toxic/caustic/chemical detergents. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, and potential electric shock. You will be using latex gloves frequently. You may work in areas that are confined and /or crowded.

OSHA Category I:
Position has potential for contact with mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues. Contact may also result from spills or splashes. Use of appropriate protective measures is required.
