Under supervision of the Program Director, the Youth Care Specialist strives to fulfill the parental role for residents under live-in conditions and works toward the resolution of behavioral and emotional problems of residents. Additionally, this position serves as a teatment team meber carrying out the agreed upon treatment plan goals effectively.
Examples of Duties:
- Supervised residents; advises and counsels residents; serves as a treatment team member; provides tutoring to residents; intervens and re-directs, as needed; remains aware of each resident problems.
- Enforces Group Home rules and procedures; acts within the limits of established discipline policy; reports serious problems to the administrator.
- Attends weeekly staff meetings and meetings called by Treatment Director; arranges meetings with staff and children to resolve treatment issues.
- Adheres to 24-hour work schedules; responsible for housekeeping duties.
- Maintains various records including daily logs, medication logs, mileage logs, clothing lists, personal files, quarterly reports, etc.
- Educates residents on emergency procedures; conducts fire drills.
- Distributes allowance to residents.
- Works/interacts in conjunction with Central Office for ordering, storing, food/supplies.
- Monitors employment of residents.
- Coordinates and participates in daily recreational and exercise activities.
- Stores medicines and toxic materials properly.
- Serves as liaison between parents and children.
- Performs other related essential duties as required.
- Ability to maintain pesonal composure and tactfully handle difficult situations and interpret questions correctly; ability to behave friendly, understanding, helpful, and professional manner with residents, coworkers, supervisors and the general public.
- Ability to supervise, counsel and mediate; ability to persuade, convince, influence and train others; ability to advise and interpret on the application of policies, procedures and standards to specific situations; ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures and standards.
- Ability to communicate effectively with immediate supervisor, school officials, staff support, medical professionals, law enforcement personnel, counselors/therapists, residents and their family members, and the general public verbally and in writing; ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control and confidence.
Typical Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED; supplemented by previous experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job.
- First-aid, CRP, and Universal Precautions certification, nutrition education, and State required annual continuing education/training of 20 hours is required.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles/vans. A valid driver’s license is required.
- Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including computers, fax machines, telephone system, etc.
- Ability to comprehend and correctly use a variety of informational documents, reports, and records.
- Ability to comprehend a variety of reference books and manuals including first aid manuals, school handbooks, policy manuals, etc.
- Ability to prepare treatment reports, resident files, recreation sheets, information petitions, chore charts, memorandum, coorespondence, and other job related documents using prescribed format and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction and style.
- Ability to accurately record and deliver information, meet deadlines, maintains confidentiality of restricted information.
- Ability to make independent judgments in bsence of management and utilize the principles of influece and rational systems in the performance of tasks.
- Ability to learn and understnad counseling terminology, language, principles, and techniques; ability to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.
- Ability to work under moderately stressful conditions, to respond immediately to crisis situations, and to balance priorities within and between offices/departments.

- Ability to exert physical effore in light moderate work involving routine stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching; tasks require visual perceptiona nd discrimination.
- Ability to participate in physical recreational activities and exercise programs.
- Ability to use and utilize cleaning maintenance materials.
- Ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated office equipment.
- Ability to work effectively in a juvenile home environment; ability to protect self and others in situations that may include violence, toxic agents/chemicals, diseases, etc.
- Essential functions are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
