Brazil Economics/Markets Correspondent (São Paulo) Job (Av Nacoes Unida, Sao Paulo, Brazil)
Title: Brazil Economics/Markets Correspondent (São Paulo)
ID: NEW00002898
Description
Reuters is looking for an enterprising, English-language journalist to cover one of the world's most dynamic economic stories: Brazil. The job will be based in São Paulo and focus on the intersection of macroeconomics and financial markets. Brazil's economy has boomed over the past decade, as a dynamic business sector and prudent fiscal management have lifted some 30 million people out of poverty. The 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics in Brazil have also put the country at the forefront of investors' radar screens. However, the economy has hit a bit of a wall over the past year, as high taxes and other costs strangle Brazil's industrial base and start to discourage consumers as well. Brazil's main stock index lost 18 percent in 2011. The next five years will be crucial to determine whether Brazil will fulfill its dream of becoming a middle-class country and global economic power, or whether it will "merely" be a big emerging market and Latin America's largest economy. The correspondent will be responsible for both macroeconomic indicators and stock market coverage, and will have to develop rich sources among the community of analysts and traders in São Paulo and abroad in order to report both stories. The successful applicant will be able to handle news quickly, will have a strong grasp of financial markets and economics, and will be a good writer who can bring the Brazilian financial story to life for a broad audience. The correspondent will also be expected to branch out across the news file and will occasionally have to work evenings and weekends.
Qualifications
Skills and Qualifications:
- At least 3 years reporting experience, with a track record of breaking news.
- A broad understanding of financial markets, monetary policy and economics.
- Ability to work on own initiative and come up with story ideas.
- Ability to develop good sources in financial markets and policy-making circles.
- Ability to send headlines fast to ensure timings wins versus the competition.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and with a large domestic news service.
- An interest in the Brazil story as a whole and a desire to write across the file.
- A basic understanding of Portuguese preferable. Spanish desirable if no Portuguese.
