Brazil Senior Commodities & Energy Correspondent (Rio de Janeiro) Job ( 12 Andar, Rio de Janeiro , Brazil-Rio de Janeiro-)

Title: Brazil Senior Commodities & Energy Correspondent (Rio de Janeiro)
ID: NEW00002600

Description

Reuters is looking for a talented and seasoned journalist to lead our commodities and energy coverage of Brazil, an emerging economic powerhouse blessed with vast natural resources. Brazil is the world's leading producer of sugar, coffee, cane-based ethanol and orange juice, and is a major exporter of soybeans, iron ore, beef, poultry and cotton. Following the discovery of massive deep-sea oil reserves off its southern coast, the country is also poised to become one of the world's biggest oil exporters outside of OPEC in the next decade. The winning candidate will become an expert correspondent covering Brazil's oil industry and will also take on the role of managing a team of reporters and leading our entire commodities file out of Brazil. The job will be based in Rio de Janeiro, home to Brazil's oil industry and the country's two largest companies: state-run energy firm Petrobras and mining giant Vale. The correspondent will be expected to provide ahead-of-the-curve and in-depth coverage of the oil and mining sectors, with a special emphasis on Petrobras and Vale. He/she will also report on the emergence of junior mining and start-up oil companies as they expand and begin to challenge Petrobras and Vale. The government is a key player in the mining and oil industries in Brazil, and as such the correspondent must be able to identify any political risks to the commodities sector as they emerge. Thanks to its rich natural resources, Brazil has benefited tremendously in the last decade from China's voracious appetite for raw materials. The winning candidate will also lead a team of correspondents in breaking news and producing a compelling file across Brazil's main commodities industries. Another key part of this job will be to track the Brazil-China trade relationship and its implications for the Brazilian economy as well as global supply of the commodities that Brazil produces. The correspondent will also occasionally help cover Brazilian politics and the ongoing infrastructure story as the country scrambles to get ready to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games.

Qualifications

- At least 5 years reporting experience, with a track record of breaking news.
- Strong writing skills and an ability to tell complex stories with flair.
- A broad understanding of commodities markets, the oil and gas industry, and economics.
- Ability to work on own initiative and come up with story ideas.
- Ability to understand company balance sheets.
- Sharp editing skills and the vision to help drive the news file, plus the ability to coach others.
- Ability to develop good sources across the spectrum, from government and policy circles to the industries and companies on the beat.
- Ability to send headlines and write fast to ensure timings wins versus the competition.
- Leadership skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team and with a large domestic news service.
- Knowledge of the Brazil story as a whole and a desire to write across the news file.
- Portuguese preferable. Spanish desirable if no Portuguese.

Global Assignment Policy terms will be considered.
