Brazil Senior Political Correspondent (Brasília) Job (Conj, Qd 701, Brazil-Brasilia-BRA-Brasilia-Srtvs)

Title: Brazil Senior Political Correspondent (Brasília)
ID: NEW00002663

Description

Brazil Senior Political Correspondent, Brasília

Reuters is looking for an experienced and ambitious journalist to lead our English-language political coverage in Brazil, one of the world's premier emerging economies and an increasingly important player on the global stage. Based in the capital Brasília, the correspondent will be expected to provide ahead-of-the-curve and in-depth coverage of the complex world of Brazilian politics, identifying and explaining the political risks that investors face in Latin America's largest economy. He/she will chronicle the government of the first woman to lead to Brazil, President Dilma Rousseff, and will be expected to help drive coverage of economic policy and the economy. Rousseff is facing a host of difficult challenges: above-target inflation, an overvalued currency that is punishing local industry, and an economy that is slowing faster than initially expected and seems likely to disappoint in the coming years with growth rates below those of other big emerging markets like China and India. On the political front, Rousseff has struggled to keep control over her coalition government, losing six ministers in her first year in office, five of them to corruption allegations. The steady drum beat of political scandals has slowed Rousseff's legislative agenda in Congress and raised doubts about Brazil's ability to push through long-sought economic reforms needed for the country to join the ranks of developed nations. Rousseff is also under pressure to keep a lid on public spending at a time when Brazil needs significant investment as it prepares to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. The successful candidate will be expected to forge good contacts in government and policy circles in Brasília to be able to break news and spot broader trends, with a special focus on the intersection between politics and economics. He/she will also be a newsroom leader who can set the news agenda and a strong writer who can tell the Brazil story in compelling fashion for a global audience.

Qualifications

- At least 5 years reporting experience, with a track record of breaking news.
- Strong writing skills and an ability to tell complex stories with flair.
- A broad understanding of economics, finance and business news.
- Ability to work on own initiative and come up with story ideas.
- Sharp editing skills to help shape copy from other reporters, plus the ability to coach others.
- Ability to develop good sources across the spectrum, from government and policy circles to the business and academic world.
- Ability to send headlines and write fast to ensure timings wins versus the competition.
- Leadership skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team and with a large domestic news service.
- Knowledge of the Brazil story as a whole and a desire to write across the file.
- Portuguese preferable. Spanish desirable if no Portuguese.
