The Indiana Department of Labor is currently seeking an Industrial Hygienist to work as a Compliance Safety & Health Officer (CSHO). While primarily responsibility is Eastern Indiana, this position may be required to travel to employer worksites throughout the state.This position functions as a senior level hygienist, working independently within the Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration (IOSHA) to achieve employer compliance with state laws, regulations and standards as they apply to occupational safety and health.The incumbent inspects and investigates occupational environments to anticipate, recognize, evaluate and advise on control of hazardous or unsafe conditions. Incumbent’s inspection results are utilized by his/her supervisor, IOSHA Director and agency legal staff in reviewing, negotiating and defending the citations. Proper evaluation of the working conditions is critical to the improvement of the safety environment of Indiana’s employees. Responsibilities :
- Conduct assigned inspections: formal & non-formal complaints, referrals, emphasis-related contact, threats of imminent danger & fatalities & catastrophes;
- Collect samples & otherwise evaluate employee exposures to health hazards in the work place including noise particulate, fumes, mists, vapors & gasses;
- Collect & analyze data & compare such to appropriate established safety & health regulations; document findings through notes, sketches, photographs, etc.;
- Hold opening conferences with company owners and/or management;
- Create detailed, accurate & timely technical reports for the supervisor for administrative & regulatory action; enter data into the Federal NCR application and/or system;
- Interview employees to gather job-specific information & caution them on safety hazards;
- Conduct closing conferences with company owners and/or management;
- Refer non-industrial-related hazards or issues to other IDOL divisions as appropriate;
- Interact with federal, state & local safety, environmental & health agencies in enforcement activities;
- Testify at informal hearings & before the Board of Safety Review.
Preferred Experience:
- Five (5) years’ work experience in Industrial Hygiene; or accredited college training in a related field.
- Must undergo an annual physical/medical evaluation to ensure physically able to carry out the essential functions of the position;
- Ability to carry sometimes heavy and awkward equipment, and to walk, climb, stand, crouch while carrying sampling and measuring devices and wearing protective clothing, including respirators;
- Ability to work in unpleasant and hazardous conditions, including noise and toxic chemicals, during inspections/investigations;
- Ability to conduct testing/sampling and interpret results as well as recognize hazards in an industrial setting;
- Broad knowledge of training techniques relating to occupational health and safety subject matters;
- Excellent verbal communication skills; ability to speak in a professional and concise manner;
- Must possess a valid Indiana Driver’s License.
- Ability to use computer.
