This International Health Research Nurse will serve as the in-country research coordinator for a nurse-initiated MDR-TB/HIV project. The position is stationed in Durban, South Africa and will work with hospitals throughout the region. The project will involve assistance with both protocol development as well as IRB/ethical review board requirements within South Africa and within Johns Hopkins University. This position will require a high level of self-management, excellent time management skills, as well as written and verbal communication skills and the ability to coordinate a large clinical investigation study. The position will require routine travel throughout the country. The nurse will work directly with the PI, Dr. Jason Farley, as well as the in-country partners at the Medical Research Council of South Africa and the Department of Health in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
The applicant will begin this position in year 1 with the primary responsibility for developing materials for both international and domestic IRB, refining clinical protocols at the practice sites, facilitating training of nurses at these sites and ensuring the necessary research infrastructure at the study locations. Development of clinical TB/HIV training materials will be necessary.
Once patient enrollment begins, individual will work with the clinicians at these locations to ensure data collection forms are accurately maintained, collect data as necessary, and perform data entry and data cleaning. The Research Nurse will oversee activities related to meeting established timelines for data collection and research review.
While there are presently no positions to supervise in this position, it is feasible that supervision of in-country personnel may be necessary. Assistance with the development of abstracts and manuscripts including performing literature reviews and manuscript preparation will be required.
As this position will be located in South Africa, without daily supervision or direct contact with the PI, a high degree of initiative and independence is expected; however, monthly conference calls will be required.

Nursing degree required. RN licensed in the state of Maryland required. Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent verbal and written skills. Excellent time management skills. The ability to coordinate a large clinical investigation study. Ability to work with in a multi-cultural, multi-language environment. Ability to work in low-resource, rural TB hospital. Excellent knowledge of infection control practices and experience with infection control implementation.
Preferred
Master’s in Nursing or Public Health. Experience in HIV/AIDS and/or TB care, as well as, International experience.
NOTE: The successful candidate(s) for this position will be subject to a pre-employment background check.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact generally require immunization against mumps, rubella, measles, chicken pox and hepatitis B. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office. Please be aware that should you require vaccination for chicken pox, the vaccine is administered in two doses given six weeks apart. Johns Hopkins University policy is that individuals will be placed off work without pay between the two doses.
