Saw Operator- Terre Haute - Westfield Steel - Terre Haute, IN





Position Overview

The purpose of this position is to operate a saw machine to close tolerances in a metal production environment. This position is responsible for loading the material so that it can be cut, mainly on band saws.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Works to supply products and services that meet or exceed the customers’ expectations. Follows the documented quality systems and processes that are continually being improved to satisfy our customers’ needs.

Unload truck and place material in the appropriate locations as needed.

Plan and coordinate material usage, drops, and cuts.

Set up, operate, or tend saws and machines that cut or trim material to specified dimensions, such as circular saws, band saws.

Adjust saw blades, using wrenches and rulers, or turning hand wheels or pressing pedals, levers, or panel buttons.

Inspect and measure work pieces to mark for cuts and to verify the accuracy of the cuts, using tape measures or rulers.

Operate panel boards of saw and conveyor systems to move stock through processes, and to cut stock to specified dimensions.

Select saw blades, types and grades of stock, and cutting procedures to be used, according to work orders or supervisors’ instructions.

Guide work pieces against saws, saw over work pieces by hand, or operate automatic feeding devices to guide cuts.

Package material as specified by the work instructions.

Assists warehouse and fab shop in various duties to help production.

May assist Production Supervisor or Lead Man in other duties or special projects as needed.

Critical Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Production and Processing: Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.

Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

Mathematics: Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications.

Operation Monitoring : Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.

Handling and Moving Objects: Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating objects.

Controlling Machines and Processes: Using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate machines or processes.

Safety and Security; Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective safety for the protection of people and property.

Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates: Providing information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person.

Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings : Monitoring and reviewing information from materials, events, or the environment, to detect or assess problems.

Judging the Qualities of Things, Services, or People: Assessing the value, importance, or quality of things or people.

Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Material: Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.

Tools : Personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, steel-toed boots, gloves, etc.), bevels, planning machines, power saws, saw machines, and welding tools.

Qualifications

This particular position requires the individual to have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); previous work-related experience is a plus; or a combination of education and experience.

Preferences

Prior knowledge of structural steel.

Forklift and overhead crane experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Working Environment and Conditions

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms, and be able to communicate verbally and in writing and take direction. The employee is frequently required to be in a stationary position. The individual will be performing physical activities that require considerable use of the arms and legs and movement of the whole body involving things such as lifting, balancing, moving, stooping, and handling of materials. The employee will regularly operate heavy machinery and use eye-hand coordination. The employee is frequently required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions.
