Relay Engineer
Under direct supervision, provides Engineering for Relay Protection of the Electric System by working closely with substation and transmission design engineers, strategic sourcing, construction and operations staff, outside consultants, and suppliers. The person in this role maintains the short circuit model, relay database and relay settings files; develops and reviews existing and new relay settings for all projects within the Energy Delivery area of Vectren, as well as coordinate ties with all neighboring utilities. Responsible to coordinate all project work with substation design engineers and construction crews, as well as Transmission System Operations (TSO) as well as fault analysis of system events. The Engineer is required to participate in an after-hours emergency response rotation.
Main Accountabilities:
Planning:
Develop plan for relay protection for substation and transmission projects. Also provide short circuit capability for for new and existing facilities and customer inquiries.
Design:
Establish relay settings and maintain the relay database. Provide protection coordination studies as requested. Review existing relay settings for system conditions and changes, as well as the installation of all new facilities. Engineer projects for replacement of aging or outdated protection equipment to include the relays, communication paths, and associated DC circuits. Provides engineering and documentation for NERC PRC standards and other standards as needed.
Budget and Schedule:
Responsible for providing cost estimates, preliminary and detailed scope of work, schedules, and project updates on protection projects.
Leadership:
Occasional controlled and uncontrolled overtime may be required.
Project Management:
Provides the status reports to allow the team to meet project schedules and budgets or make appropriate adjustments timely.
Emergency Storm Response:
Assist in storm restoration efforts to help reduce the customer outage occurrence and duration.
Functional/Technical Competency Requirements Required:
Demonstrate good level of proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Project. Strong oral and written communication abilities. Proficient in administrative computer applications.
Possess the necessary level of knowledge and skills in Geographical Information Systems/CAD. Geographic Information Systems and Computer-Aided Drafting/Design applications. Enterprise Asset Management Systems. Enterprise Asset Management systems (such as Maximo) used to organize asset data and manage construction/operations/maintenance activities performed on assets. Fixed Asset Management System. Fixed asset/plant accounting systems (such as PowerPlant) used to track units of property and associated costs. Work Planning – Design & Estimating. Design and develop cost estimates for gas or electric system capital or maintenance projects. Must also have experience in Advanced Engineering Application – Modeling/Network Analysis. Gas or electric system network analysis/modeling/simulation applications. Process Development/Improvement. Understand, analyze, and drive improvements to work processes. Internal & External Compliance. Compliance with VUHI policies and procedures and local, state, and federal regulations. Information/Data Analysis & Reporting. Research, quantify, organize, and report asset and business data. Financial Management Processes & Systems. Financial management applications (such as Oracle) used for procurement activities and project cost analysis. Project Management – Execution. Application of knowledge, skills and techniques to execute projects effectively and efficiently while meeting time and budget requirements. Business Application Software. Standard business software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
Essential:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or other related field with appropriate experience is required.
Preferred:
Co-op or intern experience with an electric utility.
Work Experience:
Essential:
0-2 years of technical background with knowledge of engineering and operational practices in electric utilities.
Preferred:
At least 1 year of experience in electric system protection, substation or transmission line design, or electric system planning. Good understanding of MS Excel, to include formulas, sorting and filtering large spreadsheets. Good knowledge of transmission structures, poles, conductors, and new technologies within the industry. Good knowledge of substation equipment to include transformers, breakers and switches, panels and relays, battery systems, and all civil and site work for a complete substation.
