Community Corrections - Lab Technician - Vigo County, IN - Terre Haute, IN

Incumbent serves as Lab Technician for the Vigo County Community Corrections, responsible for monitoring and maintaining collected drug screens and related records.

Examples of Duties:


Witnesses, observes, and collects urine samples/drug screens from male offenders, including maintaining chain of custody for samples collected, and entering results from lab into client tracking system.


Enters data from urine samples/drug screens collected into computer.


Updates client information when needed or required, including filing paperwork in clients charts as needed.


Restock supplies needed for collection of drug screens/urine samples, including ordering supplies as needed.


Schedule clients for random drug testing, including preparing test cups for shipment.


Collects client payment and/or completes contractual agreement for fee payments.


Answer clients’ questions regarding appointments and fee balances, including scheduling appointments when needed.


May testify in legal proceeding/court as required.


Performs related duties as assigned.


Typical Qualifications:


High school diploma or GED.


Working knowledge of standard office and drug collection practices and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.


Working knowledge of universal health precautions and bloodborne pathogens control, and ability to apply such knowledge to protest oneself against infection.


Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to prepare and enter documented drug screens.


Knowledge of basic filing systems and ability to create and maintain accurate and complete department files.


Ability to operate standard equipment, including a computer, fax machine, copier, and telephone.


Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, clients, drug testing facilities, and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.


Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.


Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information and records according to state requirements.


Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written and oral instructions, and present findings in oral or written form.


Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences in data, analyze and evaluate data, and make determinations based on data analyses.


Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.


Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, often under time pressure.


Ability to occasionally apply knowledge of people and/or locations and count, make simple arithmetic calculations.


Ability to occasionally testify in legal proceedings/court as required.


Ability to occasionally work extended, weekends, and/or evening hours.


Supplemental Information:


Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, clients, drug testing facilities, and the public for the purposes of instruction, coordinating operations, and exchanging information.


Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment, involving sitting/walking at will, sitting for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, reaching, keyboarding, close vision, depth perception, handling, grasping, fingering objects, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication. Incumbent maintains considerable contact with program participants and may be exposed to violent/irate individuals. Universal health precautions must be followed at all times to avoid contamination, infection, and/or injury of self and others. Incumbent occasionally work extended, weekends, and/or evening hours.
