Laboratory Assistant

Position summary: This position is designed to perform office related duties as well as phlebotomy and/or skin puncture of all ages served.

Position responsibilities:

• Answers telephone courteously and promptly. Relays messages accurately and timely.

• Relays Stat and Urgent phone messages to phlebotomist or section responsible for phlebotomy timely.

• Records phoned orders accurately and completely in phoned orders book.

• Stocks phlebotomy area with supplies daily and as needed.

• Keeps phlebotomy area clean and litter-free.

• Demonstrates competency in collection and handling of urine drug screens and thorough completion of paperwork.

• Demonstrates competency in performing Breath Alcohol Testing and thorough completion of paperwork.

• Keeps office area neat and supplies ordered as needed. Alerts supervisor to special needs before supplies run out.

• Maintains all office files in a current manner. Keeps surgicals and cytology reports filed daily.

• Participates in the distribution and mailing of physician reports daily.

• Prepares reference lab reports for distribution by courier in a timely manner.

• Demonstrates competency in performance of phlebotomy and skin punctures accurately on adolescents and adults using proper technique and adhering to all safety policies.

• Demonstrates competency in performance of phlebotomy and skin puncture accurately on geriatric patients using proper technique and adhering to all safety policies.

• Demonstrates competency in performance of phlebotomy and skin puncture accurately on neo-natal and pediatric patients. Does not avoid this age group and yet demonstrates compassion and understanding of special needs of child and parents.

• Registers reference laboratory patients accurately in the computer. Enters outpatient and reference laboratory orders in the computer accurately. Seeks technical or pathologist assistance when appropriate. Calls physician to verify orders as needed.

• Maintains working knowledge of the HCA Patient Care System. Performs all applicable functions efficiently.

• Adheres to and demonstrates safety awareness including, but not limited to Universal Precautions, Blood Borne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan, the Chemical Hygiene Plan, and equipment usage.

• Participates in inventory control, rotation of supplies, and collection of inventory data.

• Participates in training students and/or other employees

• Performs efficiently with CPCS/Healthstream/E-Resources. Maintains ongoing training and proficiency with CPCS

• Performs other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the department

• Attend Code of Conduct training course annually

• Demonstrate an understanding of and adherence to HCA’s Code of Conduct

• Demonstrates conduct that is reflective of THRH’s commitment to HCA’s Code of Conduct

• Understands and satisfies the needs of the patient population appropriate to the age of the patient served (adults, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric, and parents of neonates)

• Adheres to the Standards of Behavior for Terre Haute Regional Hospital as per the Customer Relations Policy

Qualifications

Essential educational/licensure, skills and experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent required

• Keyboarding and/or computer experience preferred

• Certifications: BLS must be maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital

Valued but not required educational/licensure, skills and experience:

• Prior Phlebotomy experience preferred

• Certification as a Medical Assistant preferred
