FUNDRAISING DIRECTOR - Amnesty International Brazil

Reports to: The country Director, Brazil and in close collaboration with the International Fundraising Programme at the International Secretariat, as appropriate. Location: Rio de Janeiro/Sao Paolo, Brazil Salary: Competitive salary and benefits package

Background: Amnesty International www.amnesty.org is a worldwide movement of people standing up for human rights. Our network extends to nearly three million members and subscribers in more than 150 countries around the world. Each one of us is outraged by human rights abuses but inspired by hope for a better world – and together we work to improve human rights through campaigning and international solidarity.

Amnesty International is now setting up a new office in Brazil which will develop and implement ambitious plans to increase Amnesty International’s human rights work in the country and engage Brazil in its work at the global level for greater impact on human rights. The new office will work to be an independently governed and self sufficient section of the global movement as part of a long term growth and development strategy. The role of Fundraising Director will be an amazing opportunity for someone who is passionate about human rights for all and ready for a creative new challenge.

Overall purpose: The Fundraising Director is responsible for mobilising resources for Amnesty International in Brazil. S/he will set up and run a diverse fundraising programme and work as part of the Brazil Senior Management Team to establish and develop an effective AI presence in Brazil in order to increase Amnesty International’s human rights work.

The Fundraising Director will develop the systems and teams necessary for the implementation of the overall Fundraising Strategy which meets Amnesty International’s revenue goals; identifying and securing new sustainable sources of funding and relationships with donors. The Fundraising Director will manage the strategic, practical and administrative elements of the fundraising programme in close collaboration with colleagues at the International Secretariat.

Amongst other direct marketing and grants fundraising activities, AI in Brazil will test and pilot a face to Face to Face Fundraising programme (known as Direct Dialogue (DD) in Amnesty). The Fundraising Director will manage these campaigns on a general level and ensure that monitoring and reporting systems are in place. He or she will ensure that fundraising campaigns are conducted within the overall strategy of the organisation and in alignment with ethical standards for fundraising and marketing of Amnesty International and Brazil.

Responsibilities: In collaboration with the country Director and relevant IS colleagues, the Fundraising Director is responsible for the following tasks:

Development and delivery of a Fundraising Strategy and an Operational Plan to achieve the above goals and which are aligned with the movement’s Integrated Strategic Plan, the Global Fundraising Strategy and human rights and mobilization priorities in the region and globally

Leadership and management

- Recruitment, development and management of an in-country fundraising team which will manage and develop all direct marketing fundraising in Brazil, including the Preparation of job descriptions and interview processes for key staff in collaboration with the IFP. - Ensure that the fundraising team’s performance meets the planned targets and be responsible for taking immediate action to improve the performance of the fundraising programme; generate income from new supporters and operate within guidelines etc - Contribute to the achievement of AI Brazil’s financial and non-financial objectives - Establish and manage an effective centralized supporter management system capable of supporting integrated mobilization of activism and resources to further Amnesty International’s human rights goals in Brazil - Establish and promote an organisational culture of integrated working practices across the Brazil office to ensure opportunities for resource mobilisation are optimized - To research and identify new fundraising opportunities and prepare activities in Brazil, developing appropriate approach strategies for each mechanism

Fundraising

- Develop and implement a fundraising strategy for Amnesty International Brazil. including individual donor recruitment, retention and development strategies, including potential major funders and grant funding strategies within the context of the Growth Strategy and Global Fundraising Strategy - Oversee the drafting and submission of high quality funding proposals as required and in collaboration with the International Secretariat. Identify and ensure relationships are built with key grant funding constituencies - Ensure the monitoring and analysis of fundraising activities against agreed targets and take appropriate actions to build on success and manage risk. - Coordinate individual engagement strategies, including major donors in consultation with the International Secretariat - To provide written, verbal and financial reports to the Senior Management Team and the International Secretariat as requested - Collaborate with and integrate into resource mobilisation activities the themes and work of the campaigning and media programme initiatives of AI Brazil - To be fully conversant with all fundraising regulations and legal issues as they relate to donor fundraising activities and to ensure that AI Brazil complies with all relevant legislation - Form alliances and networks with other NGOs to share learning, best practice and to lobby governments, banks and service providers for improved legal, cost and infrastructure frameworks for fundraising.

Person Requirements: Education University degree with experience and advanced training/courses ideally in one or more of the following disciplines: fundraising, marketing, mass communications or similar.

Language Written and oral proficiency in Brazilian Portuguese and English is essential.

Skills and Experience The ideal candidate will have - 3-5 years proven record of senior level leadership and management success in a fundraising, mobilisation or marketing role with knowledge of a wide range of fundraising or marketing techniques and activities, preferably in an international organisation. - Experience of successfully marketing events - Practical experience of writing and printing marketing communications materials - Proven experience of working within deadlines and budgets and reporting on income and expenditure - Clear experience of working with and managing agencies and teams of supporting volunteers - Experience of project management and evaluation - Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities - Excellent presentation skills - Well developed computer skills including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and databases

Personal skills - Ability to motivate others. - Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to internal and external contacts at all levels - A self-motivated individual who has the ability to work as part of and lead a team - A creative thinker - Strategic and analytical thinking with the ability to translate strategy and concepts into action and to review and adapt plans as required - An ability to demonstrate initiative and an entrepreneurial spirit - Passion and enthusiasm to represent Amnesty’s cause - Genuine commitment to the non-profit sector - Reliability and professional attitude - Exemplary communication skills, both oral and written, and fluency in English and Portuguese. Spanish communication skills would be useful - Excellent writing skills - Readiness to report and be accountable. - Willingness to learn new skills to become a professional fundraiser.
