Juvenile Court - Court Reporter - Vigo County, IN - Terre Haute, IN

Incumbent serves as Court Reporter for Vigo County Juvenile Court, responsible for assisting Magistrate, scheduling Court proceedings, maintaining evidence, and recording, reporting and preparing records of proceedings.

Examples of Duties:
Ensures the accurate recording of Court proceedings and actions, transcribing and typing trial and hearing transcripts and distributing copies to appropriate parties. Processes orders for civil cases.


Transcribes and types memorandums, court orders, reports, correspondence, and related documents from the Court.


Reviews all files on the Court’s calendar, pulling and preparing files each week, ensuring accurate and orderly tracking of each case. Maintains Court calendar, schedules Court hearings and trials, and notifies appropriate parties.


Receives and screens public inquiries by telephone and in person, determining nature of call, providing information and assistance, and/or directing caller to appropriate individual, department or agency.


Maintains special Judge and/or Magistrate files and serves as liaison between the Judge or Magistrate and various government and public agencies and departments, offering assistance and/or explaining Court procedures and practices as needed.


Composes and types routine chronological case summaries (CCS) and communicates with attorneys regarding case status.


Maintains, secures and continually updates Court files, records, evidence and exhibits pursuant to state guidelines.


Compiles statistics and prepares required reports. Assists co-workers as needed or required to maintain department operations.


Performs related duties as assigned.


Typical Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.


Thorough knowledge of standard practices and procedures of the Court, legal terminology, with ability to properly record proceedings and prepare chronological case summaries and written orders as required.


Working knowledge of standard office procedures and various computer software applications used by the Courts with ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks and operations.


Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to accurately transcribe voice recordings and prepare correspondence, legal documents and detailed written reports.


knowledge of basic filing systems and ability to create and maintain accurate and complete Department files and records.


Ability to take Court notes, type with speed and accuracy, and properly operate standard office equipment, including computer, calculator, fax machine, copier, digital recording system, and telephone.


Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, attorneys, other Courts, and the public, including sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities, and disabilities.


Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department information an records according to State requirements.


Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.


Ability to understand, memorize, retain, and carry out written or oral instructions and present findings in oral or written form.


Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.


Ability to compile, collate, or classify data.

Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations, and plan and layout assigned work projects.

Supplemental Information:
Incumbent performs majority of duties in a standard office environment and/or courtroom, involving sitting/walking at will, sitting in restricted position for long periods, pushing/pulling objects, bending, reaching, keyboarding, close vision, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication. Incumbent occasionally works extended and/or evening hours.
