Harrison Assessor Part-time Deputy Asses... - Vigo County, IN - Terre Haute, IN

Incumbent serves as Deputy Assessor/Field Agent for the Vigo County Harrison Township Assessor, responsible for performing property assessments, maintaining appropriate documentation, and assisting the public.

Examples of Duties:


Gathers and sorts building permits and appeals, measuring and drawing, and photographing blue prints of new property, including residential and commercial.


Checks property cards for accurate information at property sites in questions.


Maintains all information gathered and enters or updates on computer.


Checks Harrison Township for new construction, remodels, garages, shed and pools.


Assists with office operations when possible, such as answering telephones and greeting customers at counter, providing information and assistance.


Performs duties of Harrison Township Deputy Assessor.


Attends meetings with contractors, builders, and homeowners.


Tracks maintenance and fuel for assigned department vehicle.


Performs related duties as assigned.


Typical Qualifications:


High School diploma or GED equivalent.


Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain Level I and Level II Indiana Assessor/Appraiser certification.


Thorough knowledge of Indiana tax law, real estate assessment/appraisal techniques, and proper filing of tax forms, and ability to read and understand legal codes and apply Indiana real property assessment guidelines established by the Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF).


Working Knowledge of standard office procedures and department computer programs, and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.


Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to complete various forms and prepare correspondence and written reports.


Knowledge of basic filing systems and ability to create and maintain accurate and complete department files.


Ability to properly operate standard office equipment and field equipment, such as computer, typewriter, calculator, fax machine, copier, telephone, measuring wheel, laser, tape measure, and camera.


Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, Department of Local Government Finance, and the general public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.


Ability to comply with all employer and department policies and work rules, including, but not limited to, attendance, safety, drug-free workplace, and personal conduct.


Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of department records and information according to state requirements.


Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with difficult/irate persons.


Ability to understand, memorize, retain and carry out oral and written instructions and present findings in oral or form.


Ability to compute/perform arithmetic operations, such as measuring properties, figuring assessments and calculating taxes.


Ability to compare or observe similarities and differences in data, compile, collate or classify data, analyze and evaluate, make determinations based on data analyses.


Ability to work on several tasks at the same time and work rapidly for long periods, occasionally under time pressure.


Ability to work alone with minimum supervision and with others in a team environment.


Ability to apply knowledge of people and/or locations, and occasionally plan and layout assigned work projects.


Ability to read and interpret detailed prints, sketches, layouts, specifications and maps.


Ability to count, perform arithmetic calculations.


Ability to travel out of town for continuing education classes, but not overnight.


Possession of a valid Indiana Driver’s license and demonstrated safe driving record.


Supplemental Information:


Incumbent reports directly to Harrison Township Chief Deputy.


Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment, in a vehicle, and outdoors/in the field, involving sitting/walking at will, sitting/standing/walking for long periods, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, bending, reaching, crouching/kneeling, keyboarding, speaking clearly, and hearing sounds/communication. Site visits may involve exposure to inclement weather, walking in confined areas, and walking on uneven terrain. Safety precautions must be followed at all times to avoid injury to self and others. Incumbent maintains considerable contact with the public and may be exposed to irate/difficult persons. Incumbent occasionally travels out of town for continuing education classes, but not overnight.
