The OEF/OIF/OND Social Worker provides social work services to veterans receiving care in the outpatient OEF/OIF/OND Mental Health Support Program, part of the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC. In collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, the OEF/OIF/OND Social Worker evaluates the veterans presenting psychosocial problems and facilitates access to the resources that can most appropriately minimize the veterans psychosocial stressors. By involving and educating families and caregivers involved in the veterans care, the OEF/OIF/OND Social Worker works to optimize the social supports available to the veteran to promote maximum recovery and functioning. As an independent practitioner of social work, the OEF/OIF/OND Social Worker evaluates psychosocial needs and applies social work interventions with a high degree of autonomy, exercising independent judgment and initiative in carrying out social work functions and in applying social work values and ethics to complex situations.
In conjunction with the interdisciplinary treatment team, the OEF/OIF/OND Social Worker screens and assesses the veterans psychosocial needs and barriers in order to facilitate his or her access to appropriate VA and community resources. Through collaborative relationships with the veteran, his or her family/caregiver and other VA programs and VA staff, the OEF/OIF/OND Social Worker coordinates the gathering of information vital to the process of setting appropriate treatment goals and time frames for achieving those goals. Assessment information, comprising the Psychiatry Assessment Template includes, among other issues:
Marital/family/social status Psychiatric and substance use history Employment/educational/financial status Use of entitlement programs Legal problems/issues Impact of medical problems on psychosocial functioning Strengths/Limitations Military history (especially as it pertains to PTSD)
Completion of screening/assessment information, in coordination with the OEF/OIF/OND multidisciplinary treatment team, the veteran and his/her family, the OEF/OIF/OND Social Worker determines realistic goals with the veteran, including such factors as a) problems, b) goals, c) objectives, c) specific concrete interventions. Treatment plans are written utilizing the MHTP software.
The OEF/OIF/OND Social Worker, as the Primary Mental Health Provider for his/her caseload, will be responsible for all aspects of case management, including (but not necessarily limited to):
Provision of individual psychotherapy services Referral to appropriate group therapy services Referral to appropriate psychiatric medication management services Referral for appropriate psychological testing services Referral to appropriate substance abuse services Referral to appropriate medical services Crisis management Follow-through on no-shows, according to the departmental No-show policy Regular review and update of progress through treatment plan reviews Advocacy Education/health promotion
The OEF/OIF/OND Social Workers may be required to make presentations at PDHRA or other DoD events to assist returning veterans make their transition to the VA system. Should these programs occur during evenings or weekends, Comp Time may be offered.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Must have a Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Note: Certain Degrees with other titles are also creditable including, Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW), Master of Social Service Administration (MSSA), Master of Social Service (MSS), Master of Social Adminstartion (MSA) and Master of Social Welfare.
Licensure- Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master’s degree level. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website .
Preferred Experience: Experience in a trauma work setting is strongly preferred
LCSW is strongly preferred.
GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
GS-11 LEVEL requires a minimum of one year of post-MSW degree professional social work experience in the field of health care. This experience must have been in a clinical setting and must have demonstrated the potential to perform advanced assignments independently. (A clinical setting is a medical center, clinic – medical or psychiatric, residential treatment center, or any other type of facility where social work participates in a collaborative treatment and is identified with the medical profession.) Experience must have been obtained AFTER earning a Master’s Degree in Social Work. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs below.
1. Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services.
2. Ability to independently assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the patient’s problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills and assistance needed, in collaboration with the patient, family and interdisciplinary treatment team.
3 . Ability to independently conduct psychosocial assessments and provide psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds. This requires knowledge of human development and behavior (physical and psychological) and the differential influences of the environment, society and culture.
4. Knowledge and experience in the use of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology.
5. Knowledge of psychosocial treatment and ability to independently implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical and social problems to achieve treatment goals. This requires independent judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving or crisis intervention techniques.
6. Ability to independently provide counseling and/or psychotherapy services to individuals, groups and families. Social workers must practice within the bounds of their license or certification. For example, some states may require social workers providing psychotherapy to have a clinical level of licensure.
7. Ability to provide consultation services to other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. Ability to provide orientation and coaching to new social workers and social work graduate students. Ability to serve as a field instructor for social work graduate students who are completing VHA field placements.
8. Ability to independently evaluate his/her own practice through participation in professional peer review case conferences, research studies, or other organized means.
9. Knowledge and skill in the use of computer software applications for drafting documents, data management, and tracking, especially those programs in use by VHA.

Physical Requirements: Work involves diagnostic evaluation, planning and treatment to patients in assigned areas. Work demands are frequent standing and walking since patients and services are scattered throughout the VA Medical Center.
