Unit Secretary/PCT - Terre Haute Regional Hospital - Terre Haute, IN





The Unit Secretary acts as the primary clerical resource for the unit.

Position responsibilities:

  • Handles incoming and outgoing communications on the nursing unit pleasantly, concisely, and accurately

  • Acts as a receptionist

  • Know existing lines of communication and authority

  • Responsible for keeping charts up to date; i.e., lab reports, obtaining new and old records, orders paper supplies weekly, obtains nursing supplies daily

  • Works cooperatively with the nursing staff to provide accurate transcription of doctor’s

  • Process requisitions and forms to other departments as directed by the Director/Charge Nurse

  • Assists with completing patient charge slips

  • Assist in making out records and reports

  • Participates actively in in-service education programs concerning the Unit Secretary

  • Assist in the coordination of services and supplies for the nursing unit. Maintains adequate inventory control based on appropriate par levels (i.e. maintains appropriate supply on non-charge carts.)

  • Makes appointment for patient services in other departments as requested by nursing staff, may make post-discharge clinic or doctor appointments for patients

  • Runs copy completed labs and places in patient’s chart for physician review

  • Maintains patient census log books, completes monthly census, completes bi-weekly variable workloads reports

  • After completing training, may do EKG’s for patients

  • Assist in training others on order entry system

  • Performs efficiently with CPCS. Maintains ongoing training and proficiency with CPCS

  • Performs other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the department

  • Keeps nursing station organized and cleaned

  • May also assume the duties of a Patient Care Technician as needed

  • Attend Code of Conduct training course annually

  • Demonstrate an understanding of and adherence to HCA’s Code of Conduct

  • Demonstrates conduct that is reflective of THRH’s commitment to HCA’s Code of Conduct

  • Adheres to the Standards of Behavior for Terre Haute Regional Hospital as per the Customer Relations Policy

Qualifications


Essential educational/licensure, skills and experience:


  • High School graduate

  • Minimum of one year of healthcare clerical support experience

  • Computer literacy & intermediate experience in all Microsoft Office

  • Above average communication skills in all forms

  • Ability to multi-task with prioritizing and meeting deadlines

  • Ability work in a fast paced environment while maintaining composure

  • Certification in BLS must be maintained throughout employment with Terre Haute Regional Hospital

Valued but not required educational/licensure, skills and experience:


  • Associates Degree or currently enrolled

Physical demands and the work environment:

  • Physical demands: This position will require you to lift 10 pounds or less frequently, lift up to 25 pounds occasionally. Walk and stand most of the day, bend and stoop frequently, push and pull equipment and carts on a regular basis.

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of this job, you may be exposed to a noise level that is usually minimal but may be rather elevated at times.

  • OSHA Category III: The normal work routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues. Position is not required to perform or assist in emergency medical care or first aid or to be potentially exposed in some other way.
